About
IT professional, researcher, and educator with experience in university IT infrastructure management and computer science teaching. Focused on deep learning systems and research in machine translation and speech technologies for low-resource languages.
I am Akkal Bahadur Bist, a computer science educator, researcher and IT professional based in Kathmandu, Nepal. I hold an M.Sc. in Computer Science and Information Technology from the Central Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (CDCSIT), Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, and a B.Sc. CSIT from Swastik College, Tribhuvan University.
My research sits at the intersection of deep learning and language. My dissertation developed a Transformer-based neural machine translation system for Doteli, a low-resource Nepali language, using back translation to overcome limited parallel data. Alongside this, I have worked on convolutional neural networks for image classification and Nepali currency recognition, and reviewed transfer learning approaches for grammar generation in low-resource settings.
Professionally, I serve as Head Technical Assistant - IT at Amrit Science Campus, Tribhuvan University, where I act as administrative head of the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology across the MIT, B.Sc. CSIT and BIT programs and run the campus web, office automation and mail infrastructure. Since 2025 I have also taught as a Part-Time Lecturer across those same programs, and I supervise master's thesis work in applied deep learning.
Earlier roles in municipal MIS administration, geospatial data science research and technology leadership shaped a practical engineering perspective that I bring into both my research and my classroom. My aim is to build language and vision technologies that serve Nepali speakers, and to prepare students who can carry that work forward.

Research
Dissertation, seminar and review work in deep learning for low-resource languages, image recognition and applied machine learning.
Master's dissertation developing a Transformer-based neural machine translation system for Doteli, a low-resource language of western Nepal. Back translation is used to synthesise additional parallel data and improve translation quality under severe data scarcity.
A review of transfer learning strategies applied to grammar generation for low-resource languages, surveying pre-training, fine-tuning and cross-lingual transfer approaches and their limitations.
A convolutional neural network pipeline for recognising Nepali banknote denominations from images, covering dataset preparation, model training and evaluation.
Comparative analysis of convolutional neural network architectures for image classification, examining accuracy and behaviour across model configurations.
Bachelor's project work building a machine learning driven tool for electric power computation and estimation.

Role: Part-Time Lecturer
I teach computer science as a discipline that has to be understood conceptually and then built with your own hands. Lectures establish the mathematics and the intuition; lab work turns that into working code, so students can see exactly where a model or a system succeeds and where it fails.
Because much of my own work concerns low-resource languages and data-constrained problems, I encourage students to treat local, imperfect data as a legitimate research setting rather than an obstacle. Reading papers, reproducing results and reporting honest evaluation matter more to me than polished demonstrations.
I also keep the classroom close to practice. Version control, Linux environments, reproducible notebooks and clear technical writing are taught alongside theory, so that graduates can move into research or industry without relearning the basics of professional work.

Work
Research prototypes, academic work and production systems I have designed or administered.
Transformer-based translation system for the Doteli language, trained with back translation to expand a very small parallel corpus.
Doteli has almost no parallel corpora, so standard supervised NMT training is not viable.
CNN-based recognition of Nepali banknote denominations, later extended in supervised thesis work with GAN-based data augmentation.
Limited, visually similar banknote imagery makes reliable denomination recognition difficult.
Geospatial predictive modelling of species distribution across Nepal using remote sensing data and custom analysis pipelines.
Ecological decision making needs spatial predictions from sparse, heterogeneous field and satellite data.
Production administration of the Amrit Science Campus web portal, office automation platforms and university mail directory services.
A large public campus required reliable, locally administered digital services for staff and students.
Administration of VERSP-MIS social security systems, IEMIS education databases and the municipal web delivery platform.
Local government needed dependable records for social security provisioning and school performance monitoring.
A machine learning driven power computation tool developed as undergraduate project work.
Estimating electrical power consumption without manual calculation.
